Niti Ayog Vice Chairman Arvind Panagariya resigns

New Delhi, Aug 1 (IBNS) : Arvind Panagariya, the first vice-chairman of Niti Aayog announced his resignation from office on Tuesday, media reports said.

August 31 is likely to be his last working day in Niti Aayog.

While the exact reasons behind Panagariya’s departure couldn’t be known so far, he had reportedly informed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of his decision to quit 2 months ago.

Panagariya was considered to be Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal pick for economic reforms,

According to CNBC Awaaz, PM Modi had tried dissuading Panagariya from leaving. However, the University was not willing to extend his leave.

It is said that he will  return to academic life in the US, from where he came for the Niti Aayog assignment.

The 62-year-old Panagariya is an Indian-American economist and Professor of Economics at Columbia University.
