Kolkata/IBNS: Mexico would increase the purchase orders of medical supplies from India, which comes on the back of ease of doing business framework and the willingness to strengthen trade and commerce ties with the South Asian nation.

"We are working very strongly with India in the pharma sector and have increased purchases of medical supplies and equipment," said Ambassador of the Republic of Mexico to India Federico Salas.

"In the past, there were concerns regarding regulatory restrictions that existed between India and Mexico but now COFEPRIS, the Mexican health authority, and CDSCO, the Indian regulatory body for pharmaceuticals, are very close at arriving on an agreement that eases the process for Indian pharma players to distribute their products in Mexico," he said.

Major Indian pharmaceutical companies such as Dr. Reddy, Sun Pharma and Torrent Pharmaceuticals are already operating in the Latin American nation.

During the discussion between the members of Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Salas, an ICC member asked if Mexico can be the destination for Indian medical students to finish their education given the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

The number of medical seats in comparison to the number of aspirants are lower in India, he said.

Federico Salas said, "I was surprised to see the number of Indian medical students in Ukraine."

"We would love to promote medical tourism, and exchanges between Indian and Mexican students," he added.

With regards to boosting trade and commerce ties between both nations, the Mexican Ambassador to India said, "The population in Mexico is around 126 to 127 million but our country through free trade agreements with the European Union and other nations provides a market size of 1.3 billion people."

To enhance bilateral relations between India and Mexico, the Indian Chamber of Commerce President Pradeeep Sureka said, "ICC would love to send their delegation to visit Mexico after its visit to the U.S is completed."
