L&T Construction commissions India's first 765kV Gas Insulated Substation

Mumbai, Mar 02 (IBNS): The Power Transmission and Distribution (PT&D) business of L&T Construction has completed two benchmark projects in Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The project in Pune, Maharashtra is India’s first 765 kV Gas Insulated Substation and is being executed in partnership with Korea’s Hyosung Power & Industrial Systems.

Similarly, the project in Rajasthan is a first of its kind 765 kV transmission line on EPC basis harnessed to a state-of-the-art 2x1500 MVA 765/400 kV Air Insulated Sub-station.

The Gas Insulated Substation project is part of the transmission system associated with the Krishnapatinam UMPP to strengthen the grid connectivity through 765 kV Solapur sub-station as well as to strengthen the 400 kV power distribution in Western India. The sub-station was completed in 14 months - much ahead of schedule.

Among some of its standout features, it is the first GIS sub-station with an one and a half circuit breaker scheme in India, possesses 3449 m of Gas Insulated Bus Ducts, was constructed using pre-fabricated steel  buildings.

The 765/400 kV capacity Air Insulated Substation commissioned and executed by PT&D on a turnkey basis is the largest in Rajasthan. The project will transmit power at 765 kV level from various generating stations. It will also act as an interface for the national grid connection to the power grid substations in Gwalior and Bhiwani. The 765 kV transmission line built between Anta (Baran) –and Phagi (Jaipur) for the Rajasthan Rajya Vidhyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd is not only the first in the State but also the first transmission line stretched across 213 km on a single circuit line.

“We congratulate our customers, the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited and the Rajasthan Rajya Vidhyut Prasaran Nigam Ltd., on this achievement. One of the prime requisites for ramping up infrastructure development to get the economy back into growth mode is power and these projects show that we are moving in the right direction,” said  S.N. Subrahmanyan, Member of the Board and Senior Executive Vice President (Infrastructure & Construction).

“I am also delighted that by setting such benchmarks, we are reinforcing our position of pre-eminence and showcasing our end-to-end capabilities in the area of power, transmission and distribution,” he added.

L&T adopted several green initiatives while executing the project in Rajasthan. For instance, the design of the substation buildings uses energy efficient systems for illumination and air-conditioning. L&T also set up of a 500 kW integrated solar power plant to meet the substation’s auxiliary power requirements.  A green belt of 800 sq. meters has been created by planting 800 saplings and 14,000 sq.m of land was landscaped in and around the project.
