L&T, BEL join hands for India’s 5th-generation fighter aircraft programme

Kolkata: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) have entered into a strategic partnership to support India’s 5th-generation fighter aircraft programme, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) of the Indian Air Force.

The consortium will participate in the Expression of Interest (EoI) floated by the government’s Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and is expected to submit its response in the coming weeks, according to a press release on Wednesday.

The collaboration will bring together L&T’s capabilities in strategic defence and aerospace platforms with BEL’s expertise in defence electronics and mission systems.

Together, the two defence majors aim to deliver cutting-edge solutions for the AMCA project, seen as a cornerstone of India’s self-reliance in advanced military technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Both companies have previously contributed to India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, with L&T supplying major aero-structure modules and BEL developing mission-critical avionics and electronic systems.

Commenting on the development, L&T chairman and managing director S N Subrahmanyan said: “The collaboration with BEL marks a significant leap in our commitment to the modernisation of India's defence capabilities. We are honoured to be working with BEL to deliver next-generation technologies for the Indian Air Force.

"Both the organisations are leaders in our respective domains and our combined efforts will play a crucial role in bolstering national security and advancing self-reliance in defence technologies.”

BEL chairman and managing director Manoj Jain added: “The AMCA project represents India’s growing capabilities in defence technology. Our collaboration with L&T is a crucial step in realising this vision. With L&T’s engineering and systems integration capabilities and BEL’s expertise in defence electronics, we are confident of delivering a world-class solution that will serve the Indian Air Force for decades to come.”

The AMCA programme, designed to produce a 5th-generation stealth multirole fighter jet, is expected to provide a major boost to India’s air power and defence manufacturing ecosystem.
