‘Life has come full circle’: Ratan Tata’s companion Shantanu Naidu promoted to top role in Tata Motors

Mumbai: Shantanu Naidu, known for his close link with the late industrialist Ratan Tata, has been promoted to General Manager, Head of Strategic Initiatives, at Tata Motors after more than six years at Tata Sons.

Announcing the milestone on LinkedIn, the 32-year-old wrote, "I'm happy to share that I'm starting a new position as General Manager, Head - Strategic Initiatives at Tata Motors!"

Sharing the achievement on Instagram, he reflected on his childhood, recalling how he would eagerly watch his father return home from the Tata Motors plant. “Today, life has come full circle,” he wrote.

A mechanical engineering graduate, Naidu started his career as an intern at Tata Technologies before moving to Tata Elxsi.

His journey with Tata began in 2014 when he caught the business magnate’s attention with an innovative dog collar designed to protect stray dogs from speeding vehicles.

Given Tata’s well-known love for animals, he not only invested in the project but also took Naidu under his wing as a mentor.

This collaboration laid the foundation for a lasting professional and personal bond between them.

In 2018, Naidu became Tata’s assistant, a role that brought him into the limelight.

His close association with the business icon won widespread admiration, especially after a video of him singing a birthday song for Tata went viral.

In 2021, he authored I Came Upon a Lighthouse: A Short Memoir of Life with Ratan Tata, offering insights into his journey, lessons from Tata, and their shared love for dogs.

Naidu inspires Ratan Tata's admirer’s LinkedIn post

A young engineer, Shahrukh Khan, recently shared a touching encounter with Naidu, recalling how he was surprised by his approachable demeanour despite his close ties to Tata.

Deeply moved by Naidu’s kindness, Khan took to LinkedIn to express his gratitude.

He wrote, “Ever since I moved to Mumbai, one of my greatest aspirations has been to meet Mr. Ratan Tata Sir. Despite several earnest attempts, I was unable to fulfill this dream. However, one day, while returning home from work, I unexpectedly crossed paths with Mr. Shantanu Naidu, sir. At first, I was astonished to see someone so intimately connected with Mr. Ratan Tata Sir, displaying such a humble and unpretentious attitude."

“Gathering my confidence, I approached him, and he warmly allowed me to engage in conversation. Not only did he take the time to speak with me, but he also graciously agreed to take a picture. His generosity and welcoming nature were remarkable, making the experience truly special. Thank you, Shantanu Naidu Sir, for your humility and kindness. This moment will always remain close to my heart," he added.

Naidu later noticed the heartfelt post and responded with a simple yet uplifting message: “Best of luck, buddy.”

The story reverberated with many LinkedIn users, drawing admiration for Naidu’s humility.

Comments included, “This is how humility spreads—something the world desperately needs more of” and “That’s a memory worth treasuring.”

Others praised his simplicity and inspiring nature.
