India's defence ministry signs ₹6,900 cr contracts for ATAGS artillery and towing vehicles
New Delhi: The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth ₹6,900 crore with Bharat Forge Limited and Tata Advanced Systems Limited for the procurement of 155mm/52 Calibre Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) and High Mobility Vehicle 6x6 Gun Towing Vehicles, respectively.
The contracts were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at South Block, New Delhi.
This procurement marks a significant step in modernising the Indian Army’s artillery capabilities, replacing vintage, smaller-calibre guns with more advanced and precise long-range strike systems.
With this deal, total capital procurement contracts signed by the MoD in the current financial year (2024-25) have reached ₹1.40 lakh crore.
During the event, the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Project Director for ATAGS from the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE), Pune, was felicitated for his contributions to the project.
The ATAGS, known for its enhanced lethality and precision, is expected to strengthen the Army’s operational readiness.
Notably, this is the first major procurement of towed artillery guns from the private sector, giving a significant boost to India’s indigenous defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The initiative aligns with the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ missions, promoting domestic production, employment generation, and economic growth.
This acquisition underscores India's commitment to self-reliance in defence technology while enhancing the Army’s firepower with cutting-edge artillery systems.
