Guwahati, July 26 (IBNS): The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has created a new world record by selling an exclusive variety of Assam tea, Manohari Gold Tea, for a price of Rs 39001 per kg.

With its uniqueness in quality and taste, the Gold special grade tea from Manohari Tea Estate in upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district has now written its name in the history books as India's costliest tea.

The previous record was breached after Sourabh Tea Traders Pvt Ltd made the highest bid of Rs 39001 per kg to buy the Manohari Gold Tea.

In sale number 30, the Guwahati based trader bought two kilo grams of the aforementioned tea variant for its clients in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Kolkata.

The previous record was Rs 18,801 by Donyi Polo of Arunachal Pradesh, where  2.5 kilo grams were sold in sale number 45 on Nov 9, 2017.

In financial year 2017-18, a total of 186 million kilo grams of tea were sold in Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.

Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) secretary Priyanuj Dutta said that the special category tea was sold by contemporary Brokers Pvt Ltd and bought by Saurav Tea Traders Pvt Ltd.

“It was a good day for Guwahati Tea Auction Centre and Assam tea industry as the special category Manohari Gold Tea fetched a price of Rs 39001 per kg. It is a world record in tea auctions," Dutta said.
