Mumbai/IBNS: Billionaire Elon Musk-led American multinational automotive and clean energy company Tesla's first electric car showroom in India was launched in the country's financial capital, Mumbai, on Tuesday.

The showroom, which is located at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The showroom will provide Tesla's main display and customer experience centre.

The company has officially ventured into the Indian car market, which is dominated by manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, with the launch of its Model Y EV starting at Rs. 60 lakh.

The inauguration was marked by the presence of a reasonable crowd, which was excited at Tesla's venture into the third-largest passenger vehicle market.

Inaugurating the showroom, Fadnavis said, "This is not just the inauguration of an experience centre but a statement that Tesla has arrived in the appropriate city, which is not just the financial, commercial, entertainment but also the entrepreneur capital of India."

"Mumbai stands for innovation and sustainability. I think Tesla is not just a car company but it is all about design, innovation and sustainability for which it stands as a testament and I think that is the one and only reason that it is loved globally," he added.

"Tesla will have India as one of its best markets because people in India have been waiting for the company's entry," the Chief Minister added.

Tesla, which will be targeting the rich urban people as their potential customers, is initially offering two versions of Model Y in India.

The rear-wheel drive model is priced at Rs. 60.1 lakh and the long-range variant is priced at Rs. 67.8 lakh.

The prices in India are significantly higher than in other markers due to the country's high import duties.

As per reports, India is aiming to ramp up the EVs to 30 percent of the total car sales in the country by 2030 from current four percent.
