Centre raises jute MSP to Rs 5,650 for 2025-26; extends National Health Mission by 5 yrs
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has raised the minimum support price (MSP) for raw jute by Rs 315, bringing it to Rs 5,650 per quintal for the 2025-26 marketing season.
This revision, which promises farmers a return of 66.8% over the all-India weighted average cost of production, was announced to encourage jute cultivation.
Since 2014-15, the MSP for raw jute has seen a 2.35-fold increase.
Speaking to the media post-Cabinet meeting, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted India’s relatively low jute production, attributing it to farmers' choices.
"Jute production is based on a variety of conditions and it is finding acceptance as a sustainable product. We have continuously encouraged farmers in jute production and we assure to buy at MSP. However, the output and production of jute will be a function of the farmer's own interest on what product gives them the best value," Goyal remarked, reported Business Standard.
The current MSP hike exceeds last year’s increase of Rs 285, which set the MSP at Rs 5,335 per quintal for the 2024-25 season.
This move is aimed at incentivising farmers to boost jute production.
In addition, the Cabinet approved a five-year extension for the National Health Mission (NHM).
Highlighting the NHM's achievements, Goyal referred to them as historic milestones.
He mentioned that nearly 1.2 million healthcare workers were inducted into the NHM workforce between 2021 and 2022, and the Mission played a crucial role in India’s successful response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
