Can CEO who fired 900 employees on Zoom have a second chance? Anand Mahindra asks Twitterati

Mumbai/IBNS: Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra asked his followers on Twitter whether Better.com CEO Vishal Garg, who laid off 900 employees in a Zoom call, will be able to survive his controversial action or bear the consequences of his action.

"I'm curious whether you think a CEO can survive after a blunder like this?" Mahindra asked his 6.6 million followers on Twitter to give their opinion if Garg should be given a second chance after handling a sensitive issue like laying off in an impulsive manner.

Better.com CEO Vishal Garg drew intense criticism after the video of him firing 900 employees over a Zoom call, last week, was leaked.

In a damage control move, he apologised for his manner of handling layoffs at the mortgage company.

In a letter on Tuesday, he wrote, "I realise that the way I communicated this news made a difficult situation worse."

"Is it fair, or not, to allow a second chance...?" Anand Mahindra asked while responding to a New York Times tweet about Garg's apology.

"Definitely not. For a CEO, lacking empathy and low EQ is pretty evident," wrote one person.

"If he can give a second chance to all 900 who he disrespected... then would definitely deserve a second chance," a Twitter user said.

Another Twitter user wondered “will his team ever trust him”.

The question is not about a second chance but "about whether he has the empathy needed to be a leader !" replied one more person to Mahindra's question.

According to a report in The Daily Beast, three top executives at Better.com put down their papers after the mass firing.

The company's head of marketing, head of public relations, and vice president of communications have reportedly resigned, and more are expected to follow suit.
