BP to boost Mumbai High oil and gas output as ONGC’s technical partner

Mumbai: India's leading explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC), announced on Wednesday that energy giant BP will work as its technical service provider to enhance oil and gas production from Mumbai High, the country’s largest producing field located off the west coast, Reuters reported.

BP has committed to boosting production from the Mumbai High field, discovered in 1974, by up to 60 percent, according to ONGC's stock exchange filing.

The field, which peaked at 471,000 barrels per day (bpd) of oil in March 1985, saw its output decline to approximately 134,000 bpd by April 2024, as per a tender document issued last year.

India, the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, is striving to rapidly increase its oil and gas production, which has remained stagnant for years.

In June, the government revealed that ONGC was pursuing a technical collaboration with a global oil major to boost production.

BP’s board subsequently met India’s Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri in September 2024.

Last year, Puri emphasised that the country had been encouraging foreign companies to take part in its exploration programmes.

"We look forward to bringing our long experience of optimising performance and recovery from major mature fields around the world to help unlock and enhance production from Mumbai High," BP stated.

BP also operates 1,900 fuel retail stations in India in partnership with Reliance Industries and produces oil and gas from a deepwater block in the Krishna-Godavari basin on the country’s east coast.

Additionally, the Reliance-BP alliance has partnered with ONGC to bid for exploration rights for an offshore block in India.
