Amazon issues stern warning to workers opposing 'work from office'

Amazon has made it compulsory for its employees to work from the office three days a week. However, the new rule has not gone well with most of the employees and a chunk of the workers exited the company instead of returning to office, media reports said.

The company has issued a stern warning to the workers who have refused to adopt the new mode.

CEO Andy Jassy has sent out a strong message for employees who don't want to go back to the office: "It's not going to work out for you."

Insider reported that Jassy conveyed this during a meeting earlier in August.

Amazon tried to transition to a hybrid mode of working from ‘work from home’ in May as the coronavirus protocols eased across the world. It asked the employees to work from their respective offices three days a week.

Most of the employees did not like the change and even went as far as starting a petition and organising a protest walkout. However, Amazon has not changed its decision despite opposition from the workers.

Insider accessed a recording of the meeting where Jassy communicated directly to workers. He maintained that the employees must put aside disagreements and fully commit to the decision, adding that Amazon might not be the right place for unwilling employees.

Jassy said, "We are going back to the office at least three days a week."

According to reports, Jassy underscored that the return to office was a "judgment call." He clearly stated that if some employees don't wish to go by this, they have the choice to exit the company.

He stressed that it's not right that some team members come to the office three days a week while others don’t show up.

Amazon is yet to make a statement about Jassy’s strongly worded email surfaced to the employees.

Currently, Amazon is dealing with layoffs while also taking an uncompromising stance against employees reluctant to return to office.

In July, leaked messages indicated that Amazon might push for "voluntary resignation" from employees who are opposing the company’s decision to relocate to the in-person hubs where their teams work.

Certain employees have also chosen to leave the company voluntarily. Additionally, the company has initiated the practice of issuing warnings to employees concerning their physical presence at the workplace, highlighted the Insider report.
