Action plan ready for 26 NWs found fit for cargo and passenger movement: Sarbananda Sonowal
New Delhi/IBNS: A total of 111 waterways, including the five previously notified National Waterways (NWs), have been declared as National Waterways under the National Waterways Act, 2016 in order to promote Inland Water Transport in the country.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply to a query.
Based on the outcome of the techno-economic feasibility study and Detailed Project Report (DPR) of these NWs, the action plan has been formulated for 26 NWs that were found viable for cargo and passenger movement. At present, development initiatives have been taken up in the 18 NWs, the correspondence said.
India boasts a vast inland waterway network in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks, which collectively span 14,500 km of navigable length. Of this total, around 5,200 km of the river and 4,000 km of the canal can accommodate mechanized crafts. As per reports, approximately 44 million tonnes of cargo are transported via these waterways each year, using mechanised vessels and boats.
The 26 NWs are:
1) NW 1 Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System (Haldia – Prayagraj) 1620 km (Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand & West Bengal)
2) NW 2 Brahmaputra River (Dhubri – Sadiya) 891 km (Assam)
3) NW 16 Barak River (Lakhipur -Tuker Gram) 121 km (Assam)
4) NW 3 West Coast Canal (Kottapuram – Kollam), Champakara and Udyogmandal Canals 205 km (Kerala)
5) NW 4 Krishna River (Vijayawada – Muktyala) 82 km (Andhra Pradesh)
6) NW 5 Dhamra-Paradip via Mangalagadi to Pankopal 233 km (Odisha)
7) NW 8 Alappuzha- Changanassery Canal 29 km (Kerala)
8) NW 9 Alappuzha – Kottayam – Athirampuzha Canal 40 km Kerala
