Chicago/IBNS: Multiple people are feared dead as gunfire erupted near a Fourth of July parade in a suburb of US's Chicago.

According to the Chicago Sun Times, crowds fled at the sound of gunfire while at least five bloodied people were seen lying on the ground and another under a blanket.

The exact number of casualties remains unclear so far.

A gunman reportedly opened fire from the roof of a retail store into the parade below just minutes after the celebrations began.

A video on social media shows participants of the Fourth of July parade suddenly fleeing in panic as gunfire erupted in the streets of Highland Park.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office, where Highland Park is located, confirmed that a shooting took place and urged people to stay out of the area. The sheriff's office did not, however, confirm the number of victims.

The shooting happened "in the area of the Independence Day parade route," the Lake County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
