New Jersey/IBNS: At least six people, including a police officer, were killed in a series of "furious" gun battles in US's Jersey city, media reports said on Wednesday.

Two other police officers were also wounded during the incident, which culminated in a shootout after gunmen barricaded themselves in a shop, reported BBC.

The deceased cop was identified as detective Joseph Seals.

The motive of the attack is still not known.

"Tonight our thoughts and prayers are with the Jersey City Police Department and the friends and families of Detective Joseph Seals and the innocent victims of today’s shooting. #JCPD @JCPoliceDept," the police tweeted.

Dozens of armed law enforcement officials, including Swat teams and federal agents have been deployed at the sight of the incident.

The two suspects in the incident have been reportedly killed.
