UK High Court says only Parliament can trigger Brexit

| | Nov 03, 2016, at 10:48 pm
New Delhi/London, Nov 3 (IBNS): The British government is in a fix after the country High Court has ruled that Parliamentary nod is needed for Brexit, according to media reports.

Brexit is an abbreviation for "British exit," which refers to the June 23, 2016, referendum whereby British citizens voted to exit the European Union.

On Thursday, the judges ruled that only the country's Parliament can trigger Brexit.

The High Court, in its ruling, said that the PM does not have the right to invoke the Article 50 notice to leave the EU.

However, British premier Theresa May has claimed that her government alone can start the Brexit process, media reported.

The extraordinary development throws into confusion whether Ms May can stick to her timetable to trigger Article 50 by the end of March – and leave the EU by spring 2019, reported Independent.

The government is also mulling challenging the Brexit verdict, according to reports.
