Uber rape victim hires US lawyer

New Delhi, Jan 16 (IBNS) The woman whose rape by a Uber cab driver inside the vehicle raised storm across the nation, has sought legal assistance from a US lawyer to sue the Sanfracisco-based taxi service company.

Confirming this, Douglas Wigdor, a noted lawyer told the Guardian, "I can confirm that I have been retained by the young lady who was raped by an Uber driver in Delhi, India, last December."

"Having met extensively with her and her family while in Delhi, I can only compliment them for their bravery and fortitude during this very difficult time," the New York lawyer  said.

Wigdor was the lawyer for Nafissatou Diallo, the New York hotel maid, who accused Dominique Strass-Kahn, former Managing Director of International Monetary Fund of raping her in a hotel in 2011.

The 27-year-old finance executive was raped after she dozed off in the app-based car she hired for going back home as the driver took the vehicle to a desolate place. The accused, Shiv Kumar Yadav, had even threatened to violate her with an iron rod in a chilling reminder to what happened to the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim.

A resident of Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, the cab driver was later arrested and he is now under trial in a fast track court. On Thursday, he was identified by the woman.

After the incident Uber was banned in Delhi as the Government accused the service providing company of not doing a proper background check of the driver. Yadav was learnt to have sexually assaulted and molested several women in the past and once he was also arrested.
