Tunisia: Boat capsizes off eastern coast, 48 migrants die

Tunis, June 4 (IBNS): At least 48 migrants died after the boat in which they were traveling  capsized off the eastern coast of Tunisia, media reports said on Monday.

According to reports, coastguard officials have rescued 67 others.

The latest boat to go down off Tunisia was packed with about 180 people, about 100 whom were Tunisian, the country's interior ministry said, reported BBC.

As per the ministry, the boat was five miles from the Kerkennah Islands when the incident occurred.

Rescue operation will continue on Monday.

Migration trend in 2018:

As per International Organization for Migration (IOM) report, 32,080 migrants and refugees entered Europe by sea through the first 150 days of 2018, with about 42 per cent arriving in Italy and 34 per cent in Greece, with the remainder (24%) arriving in Spain.

This compares with 70,870 arrivals across the region through the same period last year and about 230,230 at this time in 2016.
