Trump administration revokes 175,000 visas; Here's who was targeted
The US State Department on Monday said it has revoked more than 175,000 visas during President Donald Trump's tenure for foreign nationals who violated visa terms or were involved in criminal activity, including reckless driving, sexual assault and child abuse.
"Under President Trump, the United States Department of State has revoked more than 175,000 visas from foreign nationals who violated the terms of their visas, committed crimes, called for violence against US citizens, defrauded Americans, abused our immigration system, or endangered national security," the department said in a statement.
Sharing details, the department said the majority of the visa revocations resulted from law enforcement encounters involving various forms of criminal activity. Assault, driving under the influence, theft and drug-related offences were among the leading causes.
"A significant share of visas were revoked for reckless driving, sexual assault, child abuse, fraud and embezzlement, and other crimes," the department said.
The department said the revocations were carried out as part of the State Department's continuous vetting operations, which are intended to ensure that visa holders comply with the terms of their visas and do not pose a threat to Americans.
It said visas had been revoked from foreign nationals who posed a danger to US citizens, endorsed violence against Americans, arranged illegal birth-tourism schemes or engaged in fraud.
The department also cited specific cases involving foreign nationals charged with felony kidnapping, human trafficking and sexual exploitation of a minor.
In one case, a US embassy in North Africa revoked more than 100 visas belonging to "birth tourist" parents who travelled to the United States primarily to give birth so their children could obtain US citizenship.
The department also said it had revoked the visas of multiple foreign nationals who celebrated the assassination of Charlie Kirk. It cited one individual who allegedly said, "when fascists die, democrats don't complain", while another reportedly said he "died too late".
The State Department said it would continue to identify, investigate and revoke the visas of foreign nationals who threaten the safety of the American people.
