Thailand: Drugs worth $8.2 million seized by police

Bangkok: Thai police have arrested four people and confiscated over 15 million pills of methamphetamine and other illegal drugs worth 300 million baht in what they say is one of the biggest drug busts of the year, media reported.

Four people were arrested in connection with the seizure, which included 420 kilograms (926 lb) of crystal methamphetamine as well as heroin at a home in Nakhon Pathom province, north of the capital Bangkok, reported Reuters.

The incoming police chief said the drugs were made in a neighboring country and had a total street value of 300 million baht.

"This is one of the largest drug storage facilities in the middle of Thailand, in a community area," Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong told reporters, according to the report.

The Golden Triangle region, where Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos meet, has a long-standing history of drug production and is now a major hub for the illegal production of amphetamine-like stimulants, particularly methamphetamine.

The United Nations reported that synthetic drug trafficking is on the rise in East and Southeast Asia, with large amounts of methamphetamine still coming from the region with distribution networks spreading to Japan, New Zealand, and other countries.
