London, Nov 14 (IBNS): British Prime Minister Theresa May has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of meddling in elections and undermining free societies, reports said.

Speaking at the Lord Mayor's banquet in London, May said that Moscow was planting fake stories to create disharmony in the West.

She added that while the United Kingdom would not like to confront Russia, it would protest its interests.

"Russia has repeatedly violated the national airspace of several European countries and mounted a sustained campaign of cyber espionage and disruption," May said.

"This has included meddling in elections and hacking the Danish Ministry of Defence and the Bundestag among many others," she added.

She said that Russia will never succeed in their to create discord.

"We know what you are doing and you will not succeed. Because you underestimate the resilience of our democracies, the enduring attraction of free and open societies and the commitment of Western nations to the alliances that bind us," the British Prime Minister said.

However, she added that Russia too can be a partner of the West, but only if Moscow plays by the rules.
