Princess Isabella makes history as first Danish royal woman to begin full military service
Princess Isabella of Denmark has begun her 11-month military service, becoming the first female member of the Danish royal family to complete full military conscription.
The 19-year-old reported for duty at the Antvorskov Barracks in Slagelse on August 3, marking a historic milestone for the Danish monarchy.
The eldest daughter of King Frederik X and Queen Mary joined the Guard Hussar Regiment just weeks after graduating from high school.
Low-key start to military life
Fresh from her summer break, Princess Isabella kept a low profile on her first day, driving herself to the barracks in a black SUV.
Dressed casually in baggy jeans and a suede jacket, she carried a large backpack and a small purse before showing her identification to the guard at the entrance.
She briefly acknowledged photographers gathered outside before heading inside the barracks.
Following her brother's footsteps
Princess Isabella follows her elder brother, Crown Prince Christian, who previously completed his military service at the same barracks and is now training as a second lieutenant.
While members of Denmark's royal family have long served in the armed forces, Isabella is the first royal woman to undergo active military conscription under the country's expanded national service programme.
Princess declines military salary
Unlike other recruits, Princess Isabella has chosen not to accept the salary or tax-free daily allowances typically paid to Danish conscripts.
The Danish royal household said she voluntarily declined the payments and will instead be financially supported by her parents during her period of military service.
Denmark strengthens armed forces
Princess Isabella's enlistment comes as Denmark expands its military amid growing security concerns in Europe, including Russia's war in Ukraine and rising geopolitical tensions in the Arctic.
The country introduced compulsory military service for women in 2024 and extended the duration of conscription from four months to 11 months.
Around 1,600 young people began the new extended military service this week. Later this month, some recruits are also expected to be deployed to Greenland for the first time to assist with operational duties.
