Our democracy needs you: Obama

Chicago, Jan 11 (IBNS): In his farewell speech here, US President Barack Obama urged people of America to defend their democracy.


The  44th President of the United States said: "Our democracy is threatened whenever we take it for granted....All of this depends on our participation."

He said: "We must guard against a weakening of the values that make us who we are."

"Our democracy...needs you. Not just when there’s an election...but over the full span of a lifetime," the President said.

He thanked American citizens and said it was an honourt for him to serve the nation.

"My fellow Americans, it has been the honor of my life to serve you," Obama said.

Speaking on her daughters Malia and Sasha Obama, the outgoing President said : "Of all that I’ve done in my life, I’m most proud to be your dad."

Obama said the issue of 'race' remained a potent and often divisive force in the society.

Speaking on crucial issue of immigration, he said: "If we’re unwilling to invest in the children of immigrants...we diminish the prospects of our own children."

He said: "You answered people’s hopes, and because of you…America is a better, stronger place than it was when we started."

His successor Donald Trump will be sworn into office on Jan 20.

Obama won the Presidential polls to becomne the president of the nation in 2008.
