Lebanon: IDF eliminates Hezbollah commander

| @indiablooms | May 17, 2025, at 05:54 pm

The Israel Defense Forces on Saturday said it eliminated a Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon.

However, the Israeli forces did not reveal the name of the eliminated Hezbollah leader.

In a X post, IDF said: "A commander from Hezbollah's Shaqif area, involved in the reestablishment of Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure in the area, was eliminated in an IDF strike in the area of Mazraat Jemjim in Lebanon earlier today."

IDF said the commander was killed during a strike conducted in Mazraat Jemjim village.

According to local media reports, the village is located some 30 kilometers from the Israeli border — in the Tyre District.

He was the commander of Hezbollah’s forces in the Beaufort Castle area, the forces told The Times of Israel.

Lebanon’s health ministry says one person was killed in the strike, the news portal reported.

IDF said the rebuilding of terrorist infrastructure and related activity constitutes a blatant violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon.

Ceasefire

The incident occurred despite a ceasefire agreement being reached between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon on November 27, 2024.

The ceasefire was an attempt to halt more than a year of hostilities in he region.

'Journalists Being Forgotten On The Frontline'

Meanwhile, a war reporter from Lebanon who lost a limb in the line of duty is calling for an end to impunity for attacks against journalists.

“I believe in nothing right now. Our press vests are turning us into targets and it's becoming a death sentence for us,” Christina Assi told UN News.

On 13 October 2023, Assi - who was working as a photojournalist for Agence France Presse (AFP) - lost her right leg after two Israeli air strikes targeted the exposed hillside where she and other colleagues were observing the ongoing conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants.

This year’s commemoration of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May provided a moment to reflect on the fact that more journalists were killed in 2024 than in any other year since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) began collecting data more than three decades ago.

At least 124 journalists and media workers were killed last year, nearly two-thirds of them Palestinians killed by Israel, the CPJ data shows.

Assi stands among the few survivors, and she never imagined that she would be targeted simply for doing her job.
