An Indian-origin teenager has been charged with the murder of his mother and younger brother at their suburban home in Massachusetts, United States, in an incident that has shocked the local community.

The teenager has been identified as 17-year-old Arjun Aravind, a resident of Acton.

In a statement, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acton Police Chief Douglas Sturniolo said Aravind has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery, use of a motor vehicle without authority and theft of a motor vehicle in connection with the deaths of his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and younger brother, Siddharth Aravind, 14.

The incident occurred on August 11 inside the family’s home on Martha Lane in Acton.

According to the statement, Acton Police received a call from Arjun’s father shortly after 6:37 p.m. on August 11 after he was unable to reach his family members. A tutor who was expected at the residence had also been unable to make contact with anyone inside.

The father told police that he had last spoken to his wife, Sudha, early that morning before leaving for work, while Siddharth had last been seen around noon.

Upon arriving at the residence, police found both victims dead inside the house.

“Siddharth was located on the first floor and Sudha was located in the finished basement,” the statement said.

Police determined that Arjun was not at the residence and had allegedly left in his mother’s vehicle, a 2014 green Honda Accord.

Investigators launched a search for Arjun and notified law enforcement agencies and the public to be on the lookout for him.

According to authorities, police in Wayland later responded to an unrelated alarm call at a parking lot on Andrew Avenue, where they located the suspect vehicle with Arjun inside.

“Arjun was taken into custody by police without incident,” the statement said.

What was he searching on ChatGPT?

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said the subsequent investigation indicated that Arjun had recently displayed concerning behaviour, including using the internet and ChatGPT to search for theoretical ideas or fantasies involving the killing of his family.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including determining the exact weapon allegedly used in the incident.
