A 31-year-old man, identified by multiple media outlets as Cole Thomas Allen, has been taken into custody following a shooting incident outside the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, DC.

The event was attended by US President Donald Trump and the first lady.

Stopped at the security checkpoint before entering venue

The incident unfolded outside the Washington Hilton, where the dinner was being held.

Investigators said the suspect was intercepted at a security checkpoint before he could reach the ballroom, where nearly 2,500 guests were present.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that officers engaged the suspect after he attempted to push through security.

Exchange of fire, officer injured

According to authorities, the suspect was armed with multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives.

During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged.

A US Secret Service officer was struck but survived due to a bulletproof vest and is reported to be in stable condition.

Suspect believed to be acting alone

Officials said the suspect was not injured during the exchange and is believed to be a lone actor. He was taken into custody and later transported to a hospital for evaluation. Authorities are continuing to investigate his motive.

Online profiles suggest Allen is based in California and has a background in mechanical engineering and computer science.

He is reported to have studied at the California Institute of Technology and worked in engineering roles, as well as in teaching and game development.

Charges filed, court appearance ahead

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said Allen will face multiple charges, including using a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

President Trump described the suspect as a “sick person” and praised the swift action of the Secret Service.

Officials emphasized that the security perimeter prevented what could have been a far more serious attack.

Investigation underway

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now examining the suspect’s background and activities to determine any wider links or motivations behind the attack.
