Tehran: At least four people were killed and 61 others were hurt as fire broke out at Evin prison in northern Tehran of Iran on Sunday, local media reports said.

According to the judiciary, following a clash among some prisoners of the Evin prison, a fire erupted in a workshop, prompting security and health forces to help stop the skirmish. They also helped send 70 prisoners engulfed in the fire to a safe place; however, four prisoners lost their lives and 61 were injured, reports IRNA.

Out of the injured people, 51 were immediately provided treatment.

Ten people were sent to hospital.

Amid the incident, some prisoners unsuccessfully attempted to escape the prison, reports IRNA.

The fire in the prison has been brought under control, media reports said.

Amnesty International Secretary General Agnes Callamard tweeted: "The international community must Call for a special session of the UN Human Rights Council to create a UN investigative and accountability mechanism on Iran government and religious authorities far too many crimes against the Iranian people."
