Leland (Mississippi, US): At least four people were killed and 12 others injured in a mass shooting that took place shortly after a football game past midnight on Friday in the US state of Mississippi, the BBC reported.

The attack occurred in Leland, a small city about 120 miles (190 km) northeast of the state capital, Jackson, according to the report.

Mayor John Lee confirmed to CBS that the shooting broke out on Leland’s main street during a busy Friday night.

Celebration turns into tragedy

Police said the incident happened as residents gathered for homecoming, an annual tradition in which schools welcome back alumni and host community events, including football matches.

The night of celebration turned tragic when chaos erupted amid gunfire, leaving multiple casualties and widespread panic.

Authorities said the victims’ identities are being withheld until families are notified.

Police launch investigation, manhunt underway

No suspects have been identified yet, and no arrests have been made.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack and have urged witnesses to come forward with information that could help identify those responsible.

According to the Associated Press, authorities are searching for an 18-year-old man wanted for questioning in connection with the incident.

Sheriff Randy White, who was present at the scene on Saturday, said investigators were still gathering evidence.

"We're still piecing together the timeline, and more details will be released in the coming days," he said, according to AP.

Officials have requested anyone with information about the suspect or the incident to contact the Heidelberg Police Chief or the Sheriff’s Office.

Community left shaken

The shooting has deeply rattled the close-knit community of Leland, which had come together for its annual homecoming festivities when the violence erupted.

A manhunt is currently underway to trace the suspect as authorities continue their investigation into the deadly shooting. More details are awaited as investigation progresses.
