Washington, Feb 11 (IBNS): Surprising people attending the gala event of the year, former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise appearance at the opening address at the 61st Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The crowd greeted her with a standing ovation.

Grammy host Alicia started the major music award event of the year by inviting Obama along with other eminent figures like Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith and Jennifer Lopez.

Obama was seen wearing a shimmering, silver suit in the event.

She later tweeted: "A big part of friendship is showing up for your girls—that’s why I was thrilled to be there for the one and only @aliciakeys at the #GRAMMYs. She is one of the most genuine and thoughtful people I know—there’s no one better to help us all celebrate the unifying power of music!"
