Donald Trump threatens to impose 35 percent tariff on Canadian goods

US President Donald Trump on Thursday said his nation would impose 35 percent tariffs on goods imported from Canada.

The new implementation is scheduled to begin in August.

The implementation will heighten trade tension between the neighbouring nations.

"Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own Tariffs," Trump wrote in the letter shared on Truth Social.

"Starting August 1, 2025, we will charge Canada a Tariff of 35% on Canadian products sent into the United States, separate from all Sectoral Tariffs," he said.

The US has already imposed a 25 percent blanket tariff on some Canadian items.

Trump told NBC News in an interview earlier Thursday that he would announce a new tariff rate for Canada before the end of the week.

Canada is considered as one of the top trading partners of the USA.

The Prime Minister's office told the BBC they did not have immediate comment on Trump's letter.
