Copenhagen: Several people have been killed in a shooting at a shopping mall in Denmark's capital Copenhagen, according to local police, media reported.

Giving information about the casualties, Copenhagen Head of Police Soren Thomassen told reporters that a 22-year-old Danish man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Thomassen said the motive was unclear but he could not rule out an act of terrorism, and an extensive police investigation has been initiated across the country, CNN reported.

The top police official said that there was a possibility of the involvement of several people in the killings, it added.

He told the media that the shooting started on Sunday at multiple sites in Fields a shopping centre in the southern part of Copenhagen.

Eyewitnesses said the shoppers turned panicky and there was chaos everywhere as gunfire was heard inside the mall, BBC reported.

Social media footage showed panic-stricken people running through the mall and heavily armed security personnel on the site.

At least three people harmed in the shooting have been hospitalised, spokesman for Rigshospitalet, Denmark's largest hospital, said, according to the CNN report.

The spokesperson added that extra staff have been called to tackle the emergency.
