Dangerous, historic heatwave settles over Western Canada, says Environment Canada

Ottawa/IBNS: Prolonged, dangerous and historic heatwave has settled over much of Western Canada, says Environment Canada adding that this could last for days.

Environment Canada also said that although this heatwave could ease as early as Tuesday in the South Coast of British Columbia (B.C.) and in Yukon, it will not relent until mid-week or early next week in other parts of Canada affected by this heatwave.

Classes by some school districts mostly in the Lower Mainland, British Columbia have been cancelled for the day due to extreme heat.

Several COVID-19 vaccination clinics in Fraser Health Authority are being relocated to reduce the chance of heat-related illnesses.

"All individuals with appointments at affected immunization clinics will be notified to proceed to alternate clinics and all appointments will be honoured,'' the health authority said in a statement released Saturday.

People living in the areas affected by the heatwave are being advised to avoid the direct sun, remain in a cool air-conditioned place and drink lots of water to avoid heat-related illnesses, which can sometimes be life-threatening.

Cooling centres at public libraries and community centres have been opened in B.C. municipalities and districts for those who don't have air conditioning.
