'Completely False': Trump rejects claims he confronted Pete Hegseth over ammo shortage
US President Donald Trump has dismissed media reports claiming he confronted Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth over ammunition shortages, calling the claims "fake news" and expressing full confidence in his Pentagon chief.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "The Fake News, as usual, is spreading false and completely unfounded rumors. I am extremely happy with the job that Pete Hegseth is doing."
The president also praised recent US military operations, writing: "Everything has been extraordinary, including our attack on Venezuela, where the result was accomplished in less than one day, allowing us to bring one of the worst criminals anywhere in the World, Nicolas Maduro, to Justice! Likewise, Iran, where the country has been decimated for the purpose of NOT ALLOWING IT TO EVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON, is going very well."
Trump's remarks came in response to a report by The Washington Post, which claimed he questioned Hegseth during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David last week after learning he had allegedly been given inaccurate information about severe munitions shortages that could restrict US military options against Iran.
According to the report, Trump expressed frustration during a conversation on the sidelines of the meeting, saying he believed the munitions issue "had been fixed." The newspaper cited two people familiar with the exchange, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to concerns about possible retaliation.
Rejecting the report, Trump posted another message on Truth Social praising Hegseth's leadership.
"Pete is highly respected within the Military, and has made tremendous improvements, including getting rid of DEI, and increasing recruitment to historic levels. This rumor was started by The Washington ComPost, one of the worst Media Outlets in the business, despite our telling them their story is completely FALSE. In actuality, I really believe their fake 'reporting' is treasonous!" he wrote.
In a separate Truth Social post, Trump also rejected claims of ammunition shortages, stating that the United States has ample military stockpiles.
"The U.S. has massive amounts of 'munitions,' especially of certain types. Additionally, large amounts are being manufactured and shipped to the U.S. as needed," he wrote.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also denied the report in a post on X.

"I was at Camp David with President Trump and Secretary Hegseth. This literally never happened, and we told The Washington Post that repeatedly. This B.S. story was shopped to many outlets by someone clearly out to disparage the Secretary, for whatever reason. Unfortunately for them, the President loves the Secretary and thinks he's doing a tremendous job. FAKE NEWS!" she wrote.
In its report, The Washington Post said that during the first month of the conflict alone, the US military fired more than 850 Tomahawk cruise missiles and over 1,000 Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptor missiles.
The report further claimed that dwindling interceptor stocks are influencing how the US military decides whether to engage incoming threats, with officials increasingly weighing a missile's projected destination and potential impact before authorising the use of interceptors.
