Carney to meet Macron in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon to deepen Canada-France ties

Ottawa/IBNS: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, France, on September 20 to meet President Emmanuel Macron and discuss stronger cooperation in strategic sectors.

The talks will focus on aerospace, energy, critical minerals and advanced technologies, including quantum computing, satellites and supercomputing, the Canadian government said.

The visit comes as Canada seeks to strengthen domestic capabilities and build closer partnerships amid a more divided and uncertain global environment.

"Canada and France share more than a border. We share a history, common values, and a resolute commitment to building a more secure and prosperous world," Carney said in a statement.

"In an uncertain world, President Macron and I understand the importance of this relationship. We are working to deepen and expand it across AI, critical minerals, and energy, to the benefit of both our peoples," he added.

Economic and security partnership

Canada and France share a maritime border between Newfoundland and Labrador and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French overseas collectivity located approximately 25 kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland.

Bilateral merchandise trade totalled $15.2 billion in 2025. Canadian exports to France were valued at $5 billion, while imports stood at $10.2 billion.

Trade between the two countries has increased by nearly two-thirds over the past decade, making France Canada’s third-largest export market in the European Union.

The two countries are also NATO Allies and partners in the European Union’s Security Action for Europe (SAFE) defence procurement initiative.

Shared language and cultural ties

Canada and France are founding members of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and cooperate on promoting the French language and cultural diversity.

The Canadian government said the French language and shared cultural heritage remain central to the two countries’ relationship as Ottawa expands its international partnerships.

Carney’s meeting with Macron is expected to underline the importance of the Canada-France partnership in strengthening security, economic resilience and technological cooperation.
