Carney holds talks With German Chancellor on Ukraine, Arctic security

Ottawa/IBNS: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, discussing Artic security, Ukraine and opportunities to deepen bilateral trade and investment.

According to an official statement, the two leaders discussed strengthening Euro-Atlantic security amid ongoing threats, including Russia’s continued aggression against Ukraine.

The leaders highlighted the importance of this week’s Paris Declaration, in which Canada, Germany and other members of the Coalition of the Willing reaffirmed their commitment to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, supported by robust security guarantees.

Carney and Merz also expressed their shared support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark, including Greenland, in accordance with international law.

Carney reaffirmed that Greenland’s future must be determined by Greenland and Denmark.

The leaders highlighted the importance of investing in Arctic security, describing the region as NATO’s western flank.

The two leaders further discussed ways to strengthen trade and investment ties between Canada and Germany, with a focus on artificial intelligence, defence, critical minerals and energy.
