Canada: Woman charged with disposing 6 infants in storage locker

"All of these children were likely born alive. There is no evidence of complications in these pregnancies," provincial court Judge Murray Thompson said Monday, CBCNews reports said.

"In terms of the Supreme Court saying everyone is entitled to a speedy trial, this certainly has been the opposite of that," Greg Brodsky, Giesbrecht’s defence lawyer said.

He said he had seen strange cases in his time but this case was one of the strangest.

Giesbrecht was arrested in October 2014 when she failed to pay rent for the storage locker.

Razmin Mansoub, the president of U-Haul Company of Central Canada, said staff taking inventory of locker found the remains on Monday and police was called.

When Police arrived, they discovered the remains of infants in garbage bags and other containers inside the locker.

These bodies were so badly decomposed that the causes of death could not be determined.

According to Christine Crossman, the forensic biologist that DNA tests of the babies linked with Giesbrecht's husband, Jeremy Giesbrecht and the bodies belonged to five boys and a girl.

When asked by the judge if he knew the reason of his client’s storing the bodies of her dead children in a locker, Brodsky replied in the negative.

Each charge carried a maximum sentence of two years behind bars, judge said adding that Giesbrecht will remain free on bail until her hearing.

When Giesbrecht heard that her case had concluded she was content, said Brodsk.

Although unhappy that that the result of the conclusion was not in her favour, she was happy that the trial was coming to an end, Brodsk said.

Brodsk said he will wait until Giesbrecht heard details of the sentence before deciding whether to appeal.
