Canada MPs vote to revoke honorary citizenship of Aung San Suu Kyi

Ottawa, Sept 28 (IBNS): Canadian MPs have voted unanimously to revoke honorary citizenship of Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi, media reports said.

The MPs passed the motion as a response to Suu Kyi's failure to stop the persecution of Rohingyas, who are minority, in her country.

At least 7,000 Rohingyas have fled the country in last 12 months.

The citizenship has been revoked a day after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the parliament was reconsidering whether Suu Kyi still deserve the honour.

In 2007, Canada had granted the honorary citizenship to Suu Kyi.

The honorary citizenship was conferred by a joint resolution of both houses of the parliament.

Earlier in September, the House of Commons unanimously adopted a resolution to recognise crimes against Rohingya as an act  of genocide.

In Apr 2017, Suu Kyi told BBC, "I think ethnic cleansing is too strong an expression to use for what is happening."
