Canada has maximum number of crying babies among countries

The findings were published in the Journal of Pediatrics, media reports said.

According to CBCNews reports, Canadian babies, on average, cried 30 minutes more than babies from other countries.

The reason for this was attributed to the fact that Canadian babies had some of the highest levels of colic percentage.

Canadian parents need not worry, said Psychology professor Dieter Wolke, lead author of the study.

"I don't want to concern parents in Canada that this is now a particular problem in Canada — which it isn't," he told CBC News.

The least number of crying and fussing babies were from Germany, Japan and Denmark.

According to researchers, Denmark had a much lower crying rates across a number of studies.

Research was conducted on the crying patterns in babies across the world which led the British psychologists to create the world's first universal benchmarks for the normal ranges of crying in babies during their first three months.

"The new chart of normal fuss/cry amounts in babies across industrialized countries will help health professionals to reassure parents whether a baby is crying within the normal, expected range in the first three months or shows excessive crying, which may require further evaluation and extra support for the parents," the researchers said.

The Canadian Paediatric Society offers suggestions to sleep-deprived parents on how to soothe a fussy baby.

The baby should be checked to see: if a diaper change is required, if the baby needed to be fed, the surroundings were too hot or cold, or the baby was suffering from a fever.

Other helpful factors included: playing soft music or making gentle sounds, holding your baby would be good, but it must be remembered that some babies do not like being passed from person to person, wrapping the baby in a soft blanket, rocking or swaying with your baby in a gentle motion, going for a ride in the car.
