Colombo, Aug 20 (IBNS) A late strike by Sri Lanka’s skipper Angelo Mathews to remove India’s Rohit Sharma have given the Lankans an upper hand on the ongoing second Test match as visitors India end day one with 319 runs, here on Thursday.

Virat Kohli, after winning the toss, decided to bat first and his team was in a spot of bother as they lost Murali Vijay for a duck and the in-form Ajinkya Rahane for 4 and were reduced to 12 for the loss of 2 wickets.

The Indian skipper along with young gun K L Rahul played sensibly throughout the morning session to deny the host another chance. The duo added 164 runs for the third wicket before Kohli departed for a well composed 78 off 107 deliveries. He had hit 8 fours and a six in his innings.

Rahul combined well with Rohit Sharma to form another crucial partnership of 55 runs for the fourth wicket and completing his second international Test century in the process. The young Karnataka batsman scored 108 off 190 deliveries with the help of 13 boundaries and an over boundary.

Rohit Sharma, after going through a lean patch in his Test career, made a resounding comeback as the Mumbaikar played a crucial innings of 79 runs before getting trapped in front by Angelo Mathews, minutes before the scheduled close of play on day one. His innings was laden with 5 fours and 3 hits to the fence.

Stuart Binny, making his comeback, played 40 deliveries for his 10 runs before charging at a delivery by Rangana Herath.

Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha started his innings with a bang, hitting a string of fours before resolving to his resilient self. The Bengal boy is at the crease, unbeaten on 19 off 43 balls.

For the hosts, Dhammika Prasad and Rangana Herath picked up two wickets each, while one each was picked up by Dushmantha Chameera and Angelo Mathews. T Kaushal, who had a dream run in the first Test match, returned with figures of naught on the first day.
