Second Test: Bangladesh finish day one at 246 for 8

Dhaka, July 30 (IBNS) Two crucial wickets at the fag end of the day gave South Africa an early advantage on the end of the first day’s play here on Thursday.

Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and put his team to bat first and they could manage a modest 246 for the loss of eight wickets at stumps on day one of the second Test match between Bangladesh and South Africa.

The promised rain stayed away, allowing a full day’s play. South African pacer Dale Steyn had started the match with 399 wickets, he needed just one to join the coveted 400-Club and it took him just 15 balls to complete the feat. Tamim chased a full and wide delivery to edge one to the first slip where the South African skipper Amla was standing. He made no mistake in cupping the cherry and Steyn had his man.

Tamim departed for just 6 runs. The others got starts but failed to convert them into anything bigger. Imrul Kayas (30), Mominul Haque (40), Mahmudullah Riyad (35) and Shakib Al-Hasan (35) all missed out on their half-centuries.

After the initial jolt, Kayas and Mominul were building a steady partnership when the latter tried to play a cheeky shot to the third man region. The ball bounced a bit more and took the edge only to be collected by Dane Vilas, the South African wicket-keeper. Vilas who made his debut earlier today had his first scalp.

The Bangladeshi captain played a responsible knock of 65, before falling prey to Dean Elgar. Rahim and Mahmudullah stitched together a partnership of 94 runs for the fourth wicket, the highest for their team.

Steyn finished with an impressive figure of 3-30, but the pick of the bowlers was Jean Paul Duminy. The offie took 3 wickets while giving away 27 runs. Elgar and Morne Morkel picked up one each. Morkel returned for his new spell and got the big wicket of the ICC’s numero-uno all-rounder Shakib Al-Hasan.

Though play was possible for the first day, things look gloomy with 'Cyclone Komen' hitting the Bangladeshi coasts. Heavy rainfall is expected, spoiling the remaining days of the Test match.
