Australia tighten grip over 4th Test

Sydney, Jan 9 (IBNS): Australia are tightening grip on India as the hosts take a massive 348 runs lead at the end of the fourth day of the final Test here on Friday.

After bowling out India for 475, 97 runs ahead of their first innings total of 572 for seven, Australia finished the day at 251 for six.

Australia had the worst possible start with opener David Warner (4) losing his wicket early in the match. Chris Rogers (56) played a smart knock which was needed for the hosts after losing an early wicket.

Steve Smith played another significant knock of 71 runs while

Joe Burns contributed 66 runs with his willow.

Hitting eight boundaries and three sixes, Burns blasted a 39-ball 66 while Brad Haddin lifted the tempo with his quick unbeaten innings 31 runs off 30 balls.

Spinner R Ashwin picked up four wickets for India.

Earlier in the day, India resumed their day from 342 for five, but skipper Virat Kohli could not add much to his overnight score of 140 and returned back to the crease by scoring 147 runs.

Wriddhiman Saha returned to the pavilion after contributing 35 runs with his willow.

Ashwin had shined with the bat by scoring 50 runs Bhuvneshwar Kumar added 30 with his willow.

Mitchell Starc took three wickets for Australia.

Australia have already clinched the series by taking a 2-0 lead in the series.

After the match, Ashwin told media that 'leaking' runs did not help India.

"We picked up wickets but were leaking 15-16 runs from the other end and that didn’t help our cause. But it’s gone now and we have to look forward,” Ashwin was quoted as saying by bcci.tv.

“This was one of my slowest innings in Test cricket. I wanted to eat into overs and make sure that if at all any team had a chance to win, it was India. But fortunately or unfortunately the game is very well poised and it could go either way. We’ll see what kind of strategies they adapt," he said.
