Popular Khasi singer Rana Kharkongor succumbs to COVID-19

Shillong/UNI: Popular Khasi singer from Meghalaya Rana Kharkongor, who was suffering from COVID-19, passed away at the (NEIGRIHMS) here on Friday morning.

He was 69.

An acclaimed Khasi lyricist and singer, who was also a scriptwriter, producer, and director of films, Kharkongor had pioneered innumerable music albums based on a host of themes including rural life.

The artist, who performer regularly for national broadcasters- All India Radio and Doordarshan, was a recipient of several awards, including the prestigious Meghalaya State Award, the U Tirot Sing Syiem Award for Arts and Mondon Bareh Award among others.

The mortal remains of the maestro were laid to rest at the cemetery of Church of Jesus Christ, Mawlai Mawroh here this evening.

Meanwhile, Information and Public Relations Minister, James Sangma has condoled the death of the singer.

"Saddened to learn the demise of Bah Rana Kharkongor, the forerunner of Khasi music. Meghalaya has lost an icon in the field of arts but we are proud of the legacy he left behind," Sangma tweeted while extending his sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the community he represents.
