Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 18 (UNI) Two Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses were stoned by the supporters of Youth Congress during the dawn-to-dusk hartal called by it on Monday in protest against the killing of two of its activists in Kasaragod district on Sunday night.

The agitators pelted stones on two State-owned KSRTC buses, which were going to Wayanad, at Pantheerpadam in Kozhikode.

Shops and offices were forcefully shutdown at Kilimanur in this district leading to altercations between the public and hartal supporters.

A few Youth Congress workers were arrested when they tried to stop the services of KSRTC buses in Kilimanur here.

Meanwhile, Kerala DGP Loknath Behra directed all District Police Chiefs, Range IGs and Zonal IGs to take urgent steps to stop violent incidents during hartal.

The DGP also directed to ensure that normal life is not affected due to the hartal.

Police protection is being ensured to the functioning of Government offices, banks, other institutions and KSRTC buses.

The DGP also directed to take strong action against those who indulge in violence and destroy public properties during the hartal.

As the hartal was announced without a prior notice, several inter-state vehicles were seen plying on the roads. Private buses, private cars, jeeps, autorickshaws and KSRTC buses were still plying in some places, Reports said.

Many schools and colleges postponed practical examinations due to hartal.

"Kerala University cancelled all the examinations scheduled to be held today. The new dates for the examinations will be intimated later," a University release said.
