Raipur, Apr 3 (IBNS) Geeta Verma, the Sarpanch of a village in Chhattisgarh has been hacked to death by her brother for performing the funeral of her mother defying tradition.

The incident took place on Thursday about 40 km from the state capital of Raipur.

According to reports, their mother died on March 31 and 44-year-old Geeta performed her last rites to fulfil her last wishes. But what she did enraged brother Santosh who felt his rights had been usurped.

On Thursday,  when Geeta her older sister Sita and some other women relatives were walking to a village pond for post-cremation rituals when they were attacked by an axe  wielding  Santosh and his son Piyush, 25.

Geeta died instantly; her sister Sita was wounded while trying to save her.

The attackers were caught by villagers and handed over to the police.

"It was my job to perform the last rites of my mother, how could she do it? I have no regrets," an unrepentant Santosh later told reporters.

Years ago, Santosh had reportedly abandoned his 85-year-old mother, who then came to live with Geeta.
