Kolkata/Birbhum, Sept 6 (IBNS): A West Bengal court on Tuesday awarded a youth death penalty for raping and killing a 5-year-old girl, reports said.

The Second Additional District and Session Judge of Suri Court in West Bengal's Birbhum district, Mahananda Das, sentenced 20-year-old tribal youth Sufal Tudu, who is accused of raping and killing his brother's minor girl, to death.

Earlier on December 11 in 2015, the 5-year-old went missing from her house in Birbhum district's Bolpur area and was found in an unconscious state from a canal nearby.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital and shifted to a government hospital in Burdwan district later, where she died after a couple of days.

After starting investigation, police arrested the victim's uncle, Sufal Tudu, and filed charge sheet against him before Suri Court.

Murder, rape and criminal conspiracy charges were framed against Sufal Tudu.

Police also slapped the section 6 of POSCO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act on him.

Nearly nine months after the incident, court pronounced the quantum of punishment on Tuesday.
