West Bengal: Seven killed in four road accidents

Kolkata, July 9 (IBNS): At least seven persons were killed and several others were seriously injured in four road mishaps that occurred in four districts of West Bengal on Monday, reports said.

Three persons, including two policemen, were killed and another cop was hurt as their car crashed into a truck at Nakashipara area on National Highway- 34 in Nadia district of West Bengal in the morning.

"A Raiganj to Kolkata bound private car suddenly lost its control near Gachha Bazar area under Nakashipara Police Station limits in Nadia district and smashed into a track, which was parked beside NH 34," a local police official told IBNS.

"Two passengers, who have been identified as two policemen- SI Md. Masud and constable Tarun Kumar Das, and the driver of the private car, Prabhas Mahato, died on the spot while another passenger of the vehicle- Satyabrata Bhowmick, who is also a police constable, was injured in the accident and was rushed to nearby Shaktinagar District Hospital," the official added.

According to reports, the injured cop was shifted to a Kolkata hospital later as his health condition deteriorated.

Meanwhile, a speeding passenger bus overturned and fell into a roadside ditch at Jayarampur area in Hooghly district on Monday, leaving two persons dead and at least 35 others injured.

Local police said that the bus, which was going to Bandar in West Medinipur district from Tarakeshwar, lost its control and fell into a canal beside Kolkata-Arambagh Road.

"Two persons, including a child and a woman, were killed on the spot when 35 other passengers of the bus were injured in the mishap and they were taken to Arambagh Sub-Divisional Hospital nearby," a local police officer told IBNS.

"Six of the 35 injured persons are being treated in critical condition," he added.

Meanwhile, two more persons were killed in two separate road mishaps in Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal on Monday.
