West Bengal: Railway traffic disrupted in Cooch Behar by protesters demanding separate state
Kolkata, Feb 20 (IBNS) Nearly 3000 supporters of The Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association (GCPA) blocked a railway track near the New Cooch Behar station in West Bengal on Saturday to press for their long-time demand for a separate state, according to media reports.
Cooch Behar, a former princely state, had merged with the state of West Bengal in 1950 and became one of its districts.
Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur was born as the princess of Cooch Behar.
The agitation on Saturday morning has led to a disruption in train services; two trains are delayed and railway route between West Bengal and Assam blocked, according to local reports.
In December, the party's supporters had resorted to hunger strike in favour of their demand.
