West Bengal govt forms high-level committee to probe carcass meat racket
Kolkata, May 8 (IBNS): West Bengal government on Tuesday announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate into the recently busted carcass and rotten meat supply racket in the state, reports said.
During a press conference at the state Secretariat at Nabanna, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "We've constituted an eight-member committee, which will be led by our Chief Secretary, to probe and uproot the carcass meat rackets from the state."
"Along with the Chief Secretary, our Home Secretary, Director General of West Bengal Police, Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Principle Secretaries of Health, Municipality and Urban Development, Animal Resources (ARD) and Food and Civil Supplies Departments, and the Additional Chief Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development Department will also focus on the issue," Banerjee told the media.
Recently, the state police busted a carcass and rotten meat supply chain and have arrested 12 persons, including a CPI-M leader, according to reports.
Diamond Harbour Police from South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter and catch all those involved in the racket.
One of the kingpins of the racket, Kaosar Ali Dhali, is still absconding.
