Kolkata/Asansol, May 16 (IBNS): A policeman was reportedly assaulted on Monday when he tried to catch drug traffickers in West Bengal's Burdwan district, officials said.

According to reports, during routine vehicle checks on G. T. Road, police recovered drugs and alcohols from a SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle), which was coming from Bihar, at Niyamatpur area under Kulti Police Station limits in Burdwan district. When policemen tried to seize the vehicle and arrest its passengers, three traffickers beat up ASI of Niyamatpur Police Outpost, Jayanta Mukherjee.

However, locals caught two of them, Santosh Kumar Nirala and Shailendra Kumar, and handed them over to the police later. Third person  managed to escape from the spot.

ADCP (West) of Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate Biswajit Mahato told IBNS, "During naka checking, today police recovered drugs and alcohols from a vehicle, having a number plate of Bihar, at Niyamatpur area. A sticker of Bihar assembly was also slapped on the front windscreen of the SUV. When our men tried to seize the vehicle and detain its three passengers, they suddenly attacked one ASI, Jayanta Mukherjee."

"Locals helped us to catch the accused. Two of them have been arrested and another is absconding. We have started investigation into the case and search operation to detain the rest one, driver of the car," he further said.
