WB: Congress loses Beharampur Municipality after 30 years as 17 councilors join TMC

Kolkata, Sept 18 (IBNS): The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) on Sunday took over the Beharampur Municipality in West Bengal's Murshidabad district after maximum Congress councilors joined the party.

Leaving Indian National Congress (INC), 16 councilors and the municipality's chairman Nilratan Auddy joined the ruling TMC in Kolkata on Sunday afternoon, gifting majority to state's ruling party in the municipality.

Since 1986, Congress was ruling the municipality in the heart of Murshidabad district, which is known as the bastion of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC)'s president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

After claiming the municipality, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said, "As Congress and CPI-M are together now, they have lost people's trust and everyone wants to be a part of Mamata Banerjee's grand development process and success."

Meanwhile, another heavyweight leader and MLA of Congress is likely to join TMC on Monday or Tuesday, a party source claimed.
